NMAT by GMAC Exam Expands To Philippines to Streamline Business School Admissions

Candidates can apply to five leading Philippine business schools with one test and receive complimentary test preparation materials

MANILA, Philippines (October 4, 2018) – The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) today opened registrations for the NMAT by GMAC exam. This assessment allows candidates to apply to five leading business schools in the Philippines with one test score and gives Philippine graduate management programmes greater and more informed access to domestic talent.

The NMAT by GMAC exam measures the skills required for academic success in Philippine management programmes. It is accepted by leading business schools in the Philippines, including:

  • Asian Institute of Management
  • Ateneo Graduate School of Business
  • Virata School of Business, University of the Philippines
  • De La Salle University - Dasmariñas
  • School of Business Administration, Arellano University

Philippine schools can also gain access to a broader pipeline of talent from emerging economies with candidates in India and South Africa able to send NMAT by GMAC scores to Philippine management programmes. In addition, the NMAT by GMAC exam opens doors for Philippine candidates to apply to 32 leading business schools in India and South Africa.

Owned by the organisation that created and administers the global GMAT exam, the NMAT by GMAC exam was established for use in the Philippines, in partnership with the country’s preeminent graduate management programs.

“We work closely with the Philippine business school community and those dialogues have highlighted the need for deeper, more informed approaches to selecting students for their MBA and other graduate management programmes,” said Mr Jason Lawrence, GMAC’s Market Development Director in the Philippines. “The NMAT by GMAC will help accomplish this critical goal by providing a more objective measure of student preparedness, thereby helping to ensure they are positioned for academic success.”

The NMAT by GMAC exam has been a symbol of quality since it was first introduced in India more than 20 years ago. Today, 25 leading Indian business schools accept the exam in addition to 7 schools in South Africa. GMAC offered to bring the NMAT by GMAC exam to the Philippines to provide an assessment that will be:

  • A high-quality measure of the skills that are necessary for academic success at graduate management programmes in the Philippines as well as other parts of the world, and
  • Affordable and accessible to applicants to Philippine business schools.

“Connecting with candidates and assessing their abilities to perform is a top priority,” said Professor Jikyeong Kang, President and Dean, Asian Institute of Management.

“The NMAT exam has been successful in other markets in the way it assesses a candidate’s aptitude for entry into business school,” Kang continued.”  “I’m hopeful for the standard it will help create in the Philippines for what is expected as candidates prepare for success both in the classroom and beyond.”

The Dean of Ateneo Graduate School of Business, Professor Rudy Ang said "We are excited that GMAC chose the Philippines as its entry point to launch the NMAT by GMAC in the ASEAN region.  It is a testament to the high quality of graduate management education in the Philippines.”

The NMAT by GMAC exam launches with five pioneering schools in the Philippines, with plans to move into several other countries around the world in future years. For the first time this year, candidates in India, South Africa and the Philippines can send their NMAT by GMAC scores to programs in each of these countries.

The exam itself is computer-adaptive and gives each candidate a randomly generated test from a pool of questions. It comprises three sections — Language Skills, Quantitative Skills, and Logical Reasoning. All three sections are individually timed and test takers must answer questions and review answers to each section within the total allotted time of 120 minutes. By measuring competency across three different domains, it allows schools to evaluate candidates’ strengths and development needs.

Test registration opens on October 4, 2018 and will close on November 20, 2018. Candidates can register for the exam online at www.nmat.org.

Actual testing will begin on November 6, 2018, and will continue through November 30, 2018, at test centres in Manila. A list of test centres is available at www.nmat.org.

To assist with preparation, GMAC is providing all candidates with a free copy of the Official Preparation Guide, redeemable at the school to which the candidate is applying.
