What is GMAT Superscore? A new feature of the the GMAT exam announced in June 2026, GMAT Superscore significantly impacts test takers by providing the opportunity to showcase their best section scores across multiple test attempts.

GMAT Superscore aims to reduce score anxiety and help test takers achieve the best score they possibly can, so it’s important that you fully understand how it works and what it could mean for your test-taking strategy.

In this article, we’re going to break down GMAT Superscore, explaining how it could affect you and what it means for your GMAT prep as you get ready to take the exam.

What is GMAT Superscore?

GMAT Superscore is a feature that takes your best section score from multiple test attempts and aggregates it into one collective (super) score.

For instance, let’s say you scored lower than you had hoped for in the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GMAT exam. Instead of having to submit your total score, knowing that one section is dragging your score down, you can retake the test to try and boost your Quantitative Reasoning score. Your GMAT Superscore would then combine your new Quantitative Reasoning score with your best score in the other sections from other test attempts. If you scored strongly in the other sections, you can rest easy knowing that the GMAT Superscore will preserve those scores.

This means that every time you attempt the GMAT exam, it could contribute to your strongest possible aggregate score.

Why did GMAC introduce GMAT Superscore?

Score anxiety is one of the most significant challenges preventing test takers from sending their scores to programs. GMAT Superscore is designed to change that.

Research shows that when exam takers know that every attempt contributes to their strongest possible aggregate score, they test with more confidence, send scores more willingly, and consider a wider range of programs they feel prepared to apply to.

Superscoring is widely used across undergraduate and graduate admissions. The SAT and ACT use superscoring for undergraduate admissions, while TOEFL applies a superscore model for graduate admissions.

Because higher education institutions are already familiar with using superscores in admissions decisions, business schools will understand what a GMAT Superscore is and will accordingly evaluate applicants that have a GMAT Superscore.

How is my GMAT Superscore calculated?

Your GMAT Superscore is created by aggregating the highest section scores from multiple GMAT exam attempts into a single score. It is generated automatically based on eligible scores and does not require you to manually select scores from individual sections.

It’s important to note that your GMAT Superscore does not change or replace your GMAT exam scores. Each exam attempt and its associated scores remain part of your score history. The GMAT Superscore is an additional data point that may be available for reporting alongside your original exam results.

Expired GMAT scores from the latest edition (or any GMAT 10th Edition scores) are not included in the GMAT Superscore.

It’s also worth noting that when sending your score to a school, If you have a GMAT Superscore, this will be calculated automatically and visible to the school.

How will GMAT Superscore affect my overall exam performance?

Your overall exam performance will almost certainly improve as a result of GMAT Superscore, according to admissions experts.

“One of the most common issues that my students have had in the past is that they take the test and do really well on two of the sections and bomb the third,” explains GMAT tutor Dan Grainger. “Then they take it again and do really well on their weaker section only to see another section slip. So superscoring is going to significantly increase overall scores.”

David White of Menlo Coaching adds that GMAT Superscore will also “create the incentive for applicants to take the exam multiple times to maximize the chance that they hit their very best score on each section.” Effectively, he suggests, GMAT Superscore is likely to reward the most committed applicants who are willing to retake their test.

According to our research, test takers could see a 20–50-point increase between their single or first attempt and their GMAT Superscore. However, bear in mind that this doesn’t guarantee that your score will increase by 20 or 50 points: it’s simply an average we’ve calculated based on historical performance.

How should GMAT Superscore affect my test strategy?

While the potential impact on your score is clear, Dan advises test takers to avoid thinking GMAT Superscore should affect overall test-taking strategy too much.

However, there are a few strategies he notes that GMAT Superscore could bring into play.

“One thing this might change is the order in which people take the sections on retakes,” he says. “GMAT Superscore offers opportunities to strategically choose the order of the sections based on what section they are specifically hoping to improve. Students might want to take the lagging section first, for example, when they have their most energy and focus.”

Knowing that your score doesn’t rest on a single attempt should help with test anxiety, too. This should allow people who experience test anxiety to achieve a stronger score than they may have done before the changes. Effectively, it ensures that your knowledge is being tested rather than your ability to sit an exam.

How should GMAT Superscore impact my business school application?

GMAT Superscore could also affect your broader business school application strategy. Given your submitted score is likely to accompany a GMAT Superscore, you may feel confident applying to a wider range of programs. However, David points out that the feature is also likely to drive up average test scores across all applications.

“If MBA programs embrace superscoring, it will tend to increase the average and median GMAT scores at top MBA programs,” he explains. “In turn, this will create a stronger incentive for applicants to distinguish themselves by earning yet higher scores, including by using professional test preparation services to earn scores that are higher than those of competing applicants.”

Though admissions experts believe GMAT Superscore could lead to a few strategic changes, one thing will remain the same: the importance of using official materials for revision.

“At Menlo Coaching, we encourage applicants to use official GMAC materials in their preparation, and in our GMAT prep courses and private tutoring, we require applicants to purchase the official guides and teach exclusively based on those resources,” says David. ”Official GMAT questions are the only ones that transfer reliably to higher scores on the live exam.”
