Online Master's in Finance (MiF) programs are a practical choice for students who want advanced finance training without the need to relocate or pause their careers. Technology can support live teaching, discussion, and collaboration in a way that mirrors the classroom, which means online students can reap many of the same benefits as in-person learning.
As a student, pursuing an online degree means you can continue earning, avoid living costs tied to campus study, and learn alongside peers from multiple countries and industries. The result is a global cohort and a wide professional network.
ESSCA School of Management
Cost: $16,700 (12 months) / $18,600 (18-24 months)*
Some online finance degrees aim to provide flexibility above all else, and ESSCA’s MSc in Finance sits firmly in that category. The course is taught entirely online, with students able to undertake videos, readings, and assessments at their own pace, with the support of a student success tutor to follow progress.
The degree can take one year to complete or closer to two, depending on your prior academic background. The curriculum spans a broad range of topics, including corporate finance, financial markets analysis, strategic accounting, data analysis, ethics, and international finance. The program is also structured so that students who want to prepare for CFA Level I can use the coursework as a foundation.
Although the degree is delivered fully online, ESSCA builds in the option of connecting with peers at the end of the program through a virtual or in-person short stay in Paris. It’s not required, but it gives you the chance to meet with classmates and faculty face to face after months of online interaction.
Bayes Business School
Cost: $24,600
Bayes Business School’s online, part-time MSc in Global Finance is built primarily for people who want to study while remaining in their roles. The course runs over two years and is delivered entirely online, though it is taught through a mix of live sessions, masterclasses, and webinars rather than a purely self-paced format.
You’ll work through 12 modules in total, covering areas such as corporate finance, asset management, financial statement analysis, and international banking, with electives that branch into fintech, sustainable finance, investment strategy, blockchain, and Python.
Because students join from a range of sectors and regions, much of the learning comes from the discussions themselves. Guest speakers and practitioners—often drawn from the school’s proximity to the City of London—add additional industry context. The program also builds in routes to professional accreditation, including preparation for the ACCA Global Certificate in Sustainability for Finance and the International Institute of Forecasters Certificate in Forecasting Practice.
University of Aberdeen Business School
Cost: $16,600
The University of Aberdeen’s Business School in Scotland is one of very few business schools in Scotland to offer a fully online Masters in Finance program.
The degree can be taken as a full MSc, or completed in stages through a Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate, with the option to progress later. Students complete a series of 12 to 15-credit courses, usually over 24 months on a part-time schedule, though a 12-month full-time option is also available.
The curriculum covers areas such as corporate finance, quantitative methods, asset pricing, international banking and regulation, alongside newer areas such as fintech, big data applications, and international finance markets.
If you’re interested in using the program to launch a career in investment, two optional CFA-aligned courses prepare you for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Program exams, including mock assessments.
Outside of class, you’ll gain access to resume and interview guidance, and job listings through the university’s careers service both during and after the MSc.
King’s Business School
Cost: $36,483
If you’re looking to build your career in global finance without stepping away from work, King’s College London’s Global Finance & Banking MSc gives you a way to do that through both part-time and fully online study over the course of two years.
The course starts with core modules that provide a foundation in the areas you’ll use most often, such as quantitative methods, investments, corporate finance, and risk management. Once you have the fundamentals in place, you’ll be able to choose from a series of optional modules to shape the degree around your interests. These range from asset pricing and behavioral finance to computational finance and investment banking.
All learning takes place on King’s online learning platform. Graduates move into many core areas of finance, from investment banking and risk to asset management, treasury, and consulting.
Georgetown University McDonough School of Business
Cost: $37,358 (10 months) / $42,334 (21 months), Class of 2023-24**
Unlike most online Master’s in Finance degrees, Georgetown University’s Master of Science in Finance follows a blended format. The coursework, weekly classes, and assessments are all delivered online, but the program also includes two short in-person residencies.
The Financial Markets Residency is a weeklong, in-person course that expands on the concepts taught in the Financial Markets module. Students spend the week examining the investment industry in detail, through a mix of faculty-led sessions and lectures from industry practitioners. A team case competition runs alongside the teaching, and much of the week is devoted to gathering and analyzing data for the final presentation.
The Global Consulting Project serves as the program’s capstone. Students work in small teams on a brief for an overseas client, and the project concludes with an in-person trip to present the team’s recommendations. Previous cohorts have worked on projects for the likes of Coca Cola in South Africa, KPMG in Spain, and the Namibian Stock Exchange.
These two residencies sit alongside a curriculum that can otherwise be completed from anywhere. The degree takes either 10 months on the accelerated track or 21 months on a full-time or part-time schedule.
Part-time students often balance study with full-time roles, while full-time participants use the program year to deepen their technical skills or prepare for internships.
