Built for seasoned executives, there is usually the assumption that an undergraduate degree is a prerequisite for enrolling in any EMBA program. While an undergraduate degree can help improve your chances, it is certainly possible to successfully pursue this level of business education without one. In fact, it is more common than you might think.

Candidates who have strong, real-world work experience behind them and who are simply looking to underline that with business theory can make great candidates for an EMBA.

We spoke with business school experts and EMBA graduates who have made it through the application process without an undergraduate degree to get their advice.

How to apply to an EMBA without an undergraduate degree

The process of applying to an EMBA program is largely the same, regardless of your academic background. Prospective students need to provide details of their career path, future objectives, a recommendation letter, and proof of English proficiency.

However, those without an undergraduate degree will need to seize the application journey as a chance to highlight what they do have instead: years of relevant professional experience and a clear career direction.

“The fact that I didn’t have an undergraduate degree meant I had to provide more information about my professional background, including justification for why I wanted to study an Executive MBA and why I had the appropriate experience to be accepted,” says Helen Lambert, a recent EMBA graduate from Nottingham Business School, part of Nottingham Trent University.

Leonard Corcoran, student recruitment officer at Trinity Business School, echoes this sentiment, expressing the importance of accentuating your professional achievements and motivations:

“If you are applying to Trinity without a degree, you have likely achieved your success through exceptional drive and results. Highlight that.

“For candidates without a degree, clarity of purpose is essential. Use your personal statement and interview components to articulate exactly why you want this now. A candidate who understands their own motivations is often more impressive than one with a perfect transcript but no clear direction,” he adds.

Some schools, such as Aalto University Executive Education and Professional Development (Aalto EE), located in Helsinki, Finland, offer separate admission pathways for those without an undergraduate degree to help simplify the process and give applicants the opportunity to show off the experience they do have:

“Aalto EE offers a unique admissions pathway for a select percentage of applicants who may not have a traditional academic background. In my case, the process emphasized professional experience and motivation,” says Juha Kurppa, an Aalto University EMBA graduate from the class of 2024.

“I submitted a detailed motivational letter outlining my career achievements and explaining why I was eager to join the program—and why Aalto EE and my cohort members would benefit from my perspective,” he adds.

EMBA programs need students without undergraduate degrees

A big selling point of any EMBA program is the chance to surround yourself with professionals from all walks of life and industries. Their experience can enhance your learning and empower you to build a strong professional network.

As such, business schools actively want candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply for their EMBA programs, meaning there is also real demand for applicants without undergraduate degrees. Having taken a non-traditional route, they can bring something different to the table that perhaps those with a traditional academic background cannot.

“The difference is in the toolkit they arrive with. Degree holders often come equipped with a common language of business frameworks. Non-degree candidates bring a bespoke toolkit built through years of hands-on, often unconventional problem-solving,” says Leonard.

“That contrast prevents the class from settling into groupthink. Diversity of professional experience is what makes peer learning work at its highest level,” he adds.

It is clear that just as much value can be derived from work experience as from a three-year undergraduate degree. As a candidate without an undergraduate degree, you will bring something fresh, different, and much-needed to the executive classroom.

Why you shouldn’t hesitate to apply for an EMBA without an undergraduate degree

The prospect of applying for an EMBA without an undergraduate degree may still feel a little daunting, especially if you’ve only just learned that it is possible to do so. However, it is important that you don’t let the fear of not conforming to the traditional applicant profile hold you back.

“Don’t underestimate yourself. It took me time to realize that not having an undergraduate degree doesn’t define your career or capabilities. Trust in the experience and skills you’ve built—getting this far is already an achievement, and it’s just the beginning of something greater,” says Juha.
