IIM Ahmedabad MBA Application Insider

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad is one of India’s leading business schools, topping the NIRF Management Rankings 2024. Meanwhile, its MBA program at IIM Ahmedabad is ranked among the top 50 programs in the world by the Financial Times.

Its flagship graduate business program, the two-year, full-time Postgraduate Program in Management, features a robust core curriculum that encourages students to become change leaders in their future organizations. 

At the same time, students can explore cutting-edge topics including big data analytics, artificial intelligence, and neuroscience thanks to the wide variety of electives. 

IIM Ahmedabad also gives MBA students the opportunity to spend a term at one of 80 partner business schools around the world, helping them gain international and multicultural experience. 

Considering its rankings reputation, the MBA at IIM Ahmedabad is a highly competitive program, and applicants will need to produce a strong application to be considered for entry.

We spoke to professor Viswanath Pingali, chair of the one-year  Postgraduate Program in Management for Executives (PGPX) at IIM Ahmedabad (pictured below), to hear what makes a successful applicant.

What do you look for in IIM Ahmedabad MBA applicants?

We typically look for the overall career trajectory and see if the candidate has the potential for top leadership. 

Furthermore, we try to assess if the candidate is curious and has the ability to understand a problem from multiple perspectives. In short, we try and look for whether or not the applicant has long-term potential and would make a good student in the class.

What GMAT score should candidates aim for?

Our average GMAT score has been around 700. [This corresponds to a score of around 645-655 in the GMAT exam taken after 1st February 2024.] For exceptional and diverse profiles, we have also considered much lower scores.

What should candidates expect in their admission interview?

Typically, a topic on which the candidate is expected to speak for a minute or two without preparation. Further, some discussion on the career, future plans, and so on. Of course, we expect a fairly decent grasp on current affairs.

What’s your one top tip for applicants IIM Ahmedabad?

Be truthful in the interview. And put your best foot forward. 

IIM Ahmedabad application requirements 

Eligibility criteria:

To be eligible for consideration, you must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited university with a minimum of 50% marks or an equivalent CGPA. Equivalent qualifications recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India, will also be considered.

For candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe—recognized disadvantaged social groups in India—or Persons with Disabilities, the minimum requirement is relaxed to 45%. 

Selection process:

The admission process for this program comprises three stages:

In stage one, candidates are required to take the CAT or, for international candidates, the GMAT. CAT score requirements are in the top percentile, upwards of 95, so you’ll need to prepare thoroughly.

In stage two, candidates who achieve the required scores in the CAT/GMAT are invited to the Analytical Writing Test (AWT) and Personal Interview (PI). 

In stage three, final offers of admission are made based on the candidate's final aggregate score and other factors including work experience, extra-curriculars, and academic achievements.

IIM Ahmedabad fees:

Total program fees for the MBA at IIM Ahmedabad are INR 26,50,000 (US$31,600), which includes the tuition fee of INR 19,35,000 (US$23,100). Students may also incur additional expenses including the cost of a laptop and travel costs.

IIM Ahmedabad financial assistance/scholarships:

IIM Ahmedabad offers needs-based scholarships to applicants who require financial support to pursue their MBA program. The total scholarship amount can vary, and depends on factors such as total family income, assets, and number of dependents. 

Applications open for these needs-based scholarships each year in July/August.

IIM Ahmedabad MBA careers

Graduates of the MBA at IIM Ahmedabad are highly sought after, and companies such as McKinsey & Company and BCG are top recruiters on campus. In 2023, all 385 MBA students who participated in on-campus recruitment accepted a job offer, and 221 offers were made after an internship experience. 

As suggested by the top recruiters above, the majority of these offers came from the consulting industry, though a large number of students were employed in financial services and miscellaneous conglomerates. 

Nine IIM Ahmedabad MBA students accepted international job offers in Dubai, Singapore, or Hong Kong, a testament to the global initiatives at IIM Ahmedabad. International job offers also came with larger total salary benefits—an average of US$128,399 compared to US$37,133 for students accepting offers in India.

The biggest salaries for domestic jobs came in the banking, financial services, and insurance industries, where some IIM Ahmedabad graduates saw maximum earnings potential of up to US$174,250.
