How do I prepare a strong Harvard MBA application?

As the institution that founded the MBA degree, the Harvard Business School MBA is about as prestigious as it gets.

A regular feature wihin the various annually-published business school rankings, the Boston-based business school is famed for its world class academic experience. 

Students in the two-year, full-time MBA program gain access to some of the world’s premier academic experts. The school’s pioneering case method encourages them to collaborate as they solve problems together in small, cross-cultural groups. 

The Harvard MBA curriculum features a variety of practical experiences with the aim of facilitating students while they bridge ‘the knowing-doing gap’. As a result, an MBA from Harvard can unlock a whole world of opportunity. 

Graduates from the program each year go on to high-flying careers in competitive industries: the three most popular sectors among the most recent graduating class were consulting, private equity, and technology. The average base salary across the cohort was $184,500. 

As a famed business school with links to many of the most prestigious employers across various industries, applying to the Harvard MBA is a competitive affair. There were 9,409 applications to join the class of 2026, with just 943 securing enrollment. 

So, how can you give yourself the best chance of successfully navigating the Harvard MBA application process and landing a place? We spoke with Rupal Gadhia (pictured), managing director of Harvard MBA admissions, to find out.

What skills or attributes do you look for in MBA candidates? 

The mission of Harvard Business School is to educate leaders who make a difference in the world. In each MBA class, we create a dynamic environment that mirrors the breadth and depth of our world economy, so it’s important that our students' perspectives vary. 

Remember, you don’t have to have a traditional business background to apply to HBS, but you should be business-minded, leadership-focused, and growth-oriented. 

What are Harvard Business School’s MBA application essay questions?

The essays are your opportunity to discuss meaningful or formative experiences that are important to you—our primary goal for the essays is to get to know you better. 

Applicants to the MBA Class of 2027 (matriculating fall 2025) need to respond to these three essay prompts:

⇨ Business-Minded Essay: Please reflect on how your experiences have influenced your career choices and aspirations and the impact you will have on the businesses, organizations, and communities you plan to serve. (up to 300 words)

⇨ Leadership-Focused Essay: What experiences have shaped who you are, how you invest in others, and what kind of leader you want to become? (up to 250 words)

⇨ Growth-Oriented Essay: Curiosity can be seen in many ways. Please share an example of how you have demonstrated curiosity and how that has influenced your growth. (up to 250 words)

What are the biggest mistakes candidates can make in an MBA application to Havard Business School?

The application is much more than just your essay responses! There are many opportunities to share more about your journey, including sections on employment, extracurricular activities, and awards. We spend ample time reading the entirety of the application, so be sure to dedicate time to these portions as well.

Tell us one thing about the Harvard MBA application process that most people wouldn't know.

We spend a great deal of time with the applications—as much time as needed to feel that we are making the best possible decisions in building the class each year. 

As for the process, at least two different people evaluate every application. We read, and re-read, applications as we work to build the interview pool.

Which exam scores can candidates submit with their Harvard MBA application?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a prerequisite for admission. There is no minimum GRE or GMAT score needed to apply and we do not have a preference toward one test or the other. 

What is the target GMAT or GRE score? 

While there’s no set target score, our Harvard MBA class profile shows the range of GMAT and GRE scores in the current first-year class. 

How important are test scores for candidates’ applications? 

One of the biggest misconceptions about applying to HBS is that admissions decisions are based largely on your GRE or GMAT score. That is not how it works here. We consider every element of your application to get to know you as a whole person. 

A standardized test does give us an indication of your verbal and quantitative agility; both are important for thriving in the MBA program and in the case method.

What other insider tips can you share with candidates?

The most helpful essays build on the rest of the written application while sharing new information. The best advice for the essay portion is to give yourself the time and space to reflect on your path to date. 

We know it can be tempting to write, rewrite, and rewrite again until you have it “perfect”, just be careful that you don’t edit out your personality—be authentic and be yourself.

How can candidates choose which application round to apply in? What would you advise?

There is no admissions advantage in applying in Round 1 versus Round 2. We suggest candidates apply when they feel that their application is complete to the best of their ability.
