Is an Executive MBA worth it?

Executive MBA programs are where experienced professionals with c-suite or executive-level aspirations go to take their next career step. 

EMBAs are aimed at business professionals with higher levels of experience than MBA candidates. EMBA students complete their studies alongside their work, with courses taking place part-time and taught during evenings or weekends, usually over several years. 

EMBA courses focus on developing the skills needed for those working at executive level, and many EMBA graduates receive promotions and salary increases on completing the course. 

There are hundreds of EMBA courses to choose from all over the world, but with tuition fees rising as high as $240,000, is an Executive MBA worth it?

How much does an Executive MBA cost?

A place on an EMBA can require significant investment—the average Executive MBA fees among the Financial Times' top five programs are $128,000.

Like MBAs, courses offered by US business schools are often the most expensive. The University of Pennsylvania, Wharton Executive MBA costs $238,600, while the Columbia Executive MBA costs $238,800.

There are, however, some courses at other world renowned US business schools which are slightly cheaper—the MIT Executive MBA costs $214,200 while the UCLA Anderson Executive MBA costs $200,400.

Meanwhile, outside of the US, fees are often cheaper for programs offered at leading schools. For example, The EMBA at ESCP Business School in paris costs $109,000 in tuition, China's CEIBS charges $118,000, while France's Skema Business School charges $70,400. More affordable options include EDHEC Business School’s program, which costs $62,100. Elsewhere in Europe, Copenhagen Business School’s EMBA program costs $70,600 and POLIMI Graduate School of Management’s fees total $57,400.

Paying these tuition fees can be easier for EMBA students than those studying full-time MBA programs, as they are able to continue working while completing their course. 

Some students also reduce their course fees by acquiring financial aid. Companies can sponsor students and pay their fees for them, or students can apply for Executive MBA Scholarships to help with funding. In 2025, 18% of EMBA students surveyed by the Executive MBA council received a full scholarship, and a further 30% received a partial scholarship.

What are the benefits of an EMBA? 

The investment required to enroll in an EMBA means students can expect substantial benefits from their chosen school.  

Courses focus on developing the skills needed at high level leadership positions, with modules aiming to develop students’ leadership, decision making, strategy and entrepreneurial skills. 

Balázs Szonder felt the skills he learned during his EMBA at Corvinus University of Budapest prepared him to be a successful leader. He now works as head of the Catalyst Leadership Development Program at MVM group, the largest electricity provider in central and eastern Europe.

A survey by the Executive MBA Council found 55% of students in 2025 saw their responsibilities at work increased during their studies, while a further 40% received a promotion after completing the program. 

EMBA students are also given chances to further their careers through networking opportunities, which are a key part of any course. 

Students can tap into wide alumni networks, often comprising thousands of professionals working in a wide variety of industries. Interacting with classmates from a range of different countries and industries also gives students the chance to learn and broaden their expertise.

Executive MBA salary: What will you earn? 

As well as significant career opportunities, EMBA students often see a healthy return on their investment after graduating. Recent Executive MBA Council figures show in 2025 students’ salaries increased on average by 17.5% between starting and finishing their course, with graduates earning an average of $226,400 upon completing their EMBA. 

For the class of 2025, average salaries rose by 65% to $273,400 within three years of graduation. The long term financial benefits of enrolling on an EMBA are therefore a significant factor for students considering applying to a course.

Should you study an EMBA?
