Core MBA Lessons: How To Become A Cross Functional Leader

Cross functional leadership is vital across a wide range of industries, helping to drive collaboration, allowing leaders to make fast decisions, and assisting businesses in achieving better results. To be an effective manager, you must be able to bring together all the different elements of business—from marketing and finance to data and AI.

According to the latest GMAC Corporate Recruiter’s Survey, problem-solving and strategic thinking are the top skills employers look for today. Alongside a broad business acumen that integrates all areas of business, these skills are key to cross functional leadership.

So, what is the secret to developing wide-ranging business knowledge, and why is cross functional leadership important today? We spoke to Renato Lima, associate professor of management and deputy dean (student journey) at Asia School of Business (ASB), to find out.

What is integrative management?

If you want to become a cross functional leader, it’s essential that you understand integrative management—a comprehensive approach to leadership that combines insights from multiple disciplines, such as finance, marketing, and operations. This crucial area has a large impact on how leaders make decisions that are impactful across an entire business.

Understanding integrative management is therefore an important step in allowing you to develop from a contributor within an organization to an individual capable of leading cross-functional teams.

At ASB, the school encourages students to develop a holistic approach to business within its Integrative Management Lab. Here, students are part of a diverse, interdisciplinary learning environment where they gain opportunities to develop their technical skills and take on practical learning experiences.

The program begins with an immersive week where students analyze a real-life case that's taught by a range of ASB professors from various disciplines, including finance, marketing, and AI. This is designed to introduce the class to different discipline perspectives before they then engage with subsequent practical projects. Students are encouraged to approach the problems they encounter through different lenses and must present the solutions they come up with to corporate leaders.

“The most traditional approach of teaching in business school is to slice knowledge through disciplines, and integration is left to the professionals,” explains Renato (pictured above). “We reverse that—we force the view of integration early on.”

"Very often people talk about learning it [management] holistically, but you can't look at the whole thing. You have to take it apart and learn the pieces," adds Professor Don Lessard, who brought this approach to ASB and furthered its development. 

This cross functional approach encourages students to connect their analytical skills with an understanding of organizational dynamics and how to work toward long-term goals. This is designed to prepare them to lead effectively.

“In Action Learning courses, students are always practicing the integration of management,” explains Renato. “In the Integrative Management Lab, we bring this forward by explicitly showing the importance of integrating knowledge from the first week of our curriculum.”

The lessons learned within the lab prepare students to face varied issues and deal with multiple stakeholders when they take on Action Learning projects later in the semester, he adds. 

Why integrative management is important

Within an increasingly complex business environment, integrative management is essential for leaders who regularly make decisions that impact whole organizations. By connecting insights across different areas and business disciplines, this approach builds collaboration, innovation, and adaptability—all of which are key to the kind of cross functional approach that helps a business thrive.

“Students see that to manage is to be able to integrate different perspectives to solve real world issues,” says Renato. “It means they are much more able to tackle the problems they will face when they graduate and go into the world and become business leaders.

“Once they return to the workforce as professionals, they end up being very knowledgeable about each discipline,” he continues. “Essentially, students are able to solve problems, understand the complexity of the world, and go ahead and face these challenges, bringing the best of what they have learned throughout their MBA.”

With broad, cross functional capabilities, MBA students with integrative management skills are suited to a wide range of roles, including general management and leadership, strategy and consulting, product management, and entrepreneurship.

How to build cross functional leadership skills

Through developing a holistic approach to business and building skills such as strategic thinking, problem solving, adaptability, and teamwork, an MBA can help you grow as a cross functional leader. At ASB, students are encouraged to break down these skills from the very first stage of the program, combining them into one integrative approach to management.

Practical learning experiences and opportunities prepare students for real-world business challenges and cross functional leadership roles. Each student must participate in a business practicum that involves undertaking a course taught within a real company. They must also complete a capstone project that requires them to work in teams alongside fellow classmates aiming to solve complex real-world problems.

“The interesting thing about experiential learning is that the world is very complex—you cannot fully codify it and reduce it into a single discipline,” says Renato. “You have to deal with a variety of stakeholders, and often renegotiate the scope of the problem, so you need to integrate knowledge from different disciplines.”

Becoming a cross functional leader requires a knowledge of different disciplines, diverse perspectives, and the ability to integrate them into effective strategies.
