Though some MBA programs have class sizes that run into the hundreds, programs such as the HKU MBA limit theirs to 50. This is designed to create a welcoming and tight-knit ecosystem that can help students flourish and learn from one another.

This aspect of the program appealed to Tejaswi Kumar, a current HKU MBA student from India. “I thought it would be good for me to study in an environment where I can be with people from different cultural and professional backgrounds,” he explains.

Tejaswi adds that he has enjoyed opportunities throughout his studies to build genuine connections and learn from the strengths of classmates who excel in a wide variety of areas.

The MBA curriculum provides a holistic understanding of core business, designed to help students pursue personalized career paths and work toward achieving varied goals. Alongside this theoretical learning, much of the MBA experience takes place outside the classroom. The location where you choose to study is therefore important. As a major commercial hub within Greater China and Asia, not only is Hong Kong a location that provides strong career prospects for MBAs, but it is also a dynamic city that offers opportunities for both learning and personal enrichment.

Tejaswi says that he was drawn to Hong Kong for its long-standing reputation as a global financial center. He knew this cosmopolitan environment would help broaden his perspective, he adds.

This exposure, through networking, collaboration, and meaningful connections beyond the classroom, has become a defining part of his MBA experience.

Jaekyung Shin, a fellow HKU MBA student from South Korea, agrees, adding that building personal connections often opens doors to professional opportunities. By actively engaging in networking, she connects with people who are both inspiring and supportive of her career growth.

Jaekyung highlights that this has helped her meet people working in roles and companies that she aspires to. As students already come to the program with professional experience, such connections help them stay informed about market trends, gain valuable insights, and ultimately stand out in the competitive job market.

Expert job advice gives you career clarity

Another underappreciated aspect of an MBA is the clarity and direction it can bring to your career trajectory. Both Tejaswi and Jaekyung highlight the value of the HKU MBA Career Development Team (CDT), which gives personalized guidance to each student, aligned with their career ambitions.

“Each of us gets assigned to a career manager, and they help us a lot,” Tejaswi explains. Students get the opportunity to share their professional objectives with their manager who then listen and offer support based on their needs, he adds.

With strong links to leading employers and a wide range of industries, the Career Development Team offers tailored support and facilitates introductions to help students toward their desired career path.

Similarly, Jaekyung emphasizes that the CDT’s role goes beyond offering advice. It encourages students to take initiative and put their own career plans into action. The program provides resources, encouragement, and hands‑on guidance to help students forge the professional relationships that are essential for landing the right role after graduation.

“The school is often encouraging us to do more coffee chats, to go on company visits, and to do more networking,” she says.

Ultimately, having that kind of support from the Career Development Team doesn’t just help you when identifying your career goals, it also gives you additional context and confidence to embark on your next steps.

An MBA gives you the confidence to lead

Pursuing an MBA is a major commitment, challenging you academically, professionally, and personally, often beginning even before the program starts with the highly competitive admissions process. Yet, as students progress through their studies, mastering complex material, navigating campus life, and refining their business acumen, the MBA journey becomes a powerful catalyst for building confidence and leadership skills.

For Tejaswi, the HKU MBA experience has been transformative, he explains, giving him the confidence to handle challenging situations and to collaborate seamlessly with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds.

As for Jaekyung, she says that the HKU faculty are constantly encouraging her to step beyond her comfort zone and embrace new leadership opportunities, which has given her more confidence than she ever anticipated.

“Since being here, I have met wonderful friends and faculty members who have encouraged me to pursue what I want to do and figure myself out more,” she says. “So actually, now I feel more confident [than ever before].”
