The 25 Best Companies For Diversity And Inclusion

Diversity is a hot topic on business school campuses and rightfully so, with an increasing number of top MBA programs attracting international and female students. 

According to a Glassdoor survey, the majority of job seekers say that diversity in the workforce is an important factor when evaluating job offers. In total, 64% of white respondents agree alongside 85% of Asian respondents and 86% Black respondents. 

Major companies across the world have been held accountable for the lack of inclusivity and diversity in the workplace. 

According to the global charity, Lloyd's Register Foundation, over one in five employees worldwide have experienced some form of discrimination or harassment in the workplace.

But which employers are getting it right?

Each year, Forbes compiles a ranking of America's Best Employers For Diversity. In the 2024 list 50,000 Americans were asked to identify companies they thought were most dedicated to diversity and inclusion. Other metrics include the diversity of company boards and executive teams, and the most proactive diversity and inclusion initiatives. 

So, which companies make the 2024 ranking? Here are the 25 best companies for diversity and inclusion in the USA:

25. Excellus BlueCross BlueShield  

This insurance company is headquartered in New York and has 4000 employees. In 2019, Exellus BlueCross BlueShield rolled out its I.D.E.A mindset, which involves incorporating inclusion, diversity, equity, and access into the company's corporate mission. 

24. Johnson and Johnson 

Well-known drugs and biotech company, Johnson & Johnson, has 155,800 employees worldwide—making it the largest on this list. Currently, 43% of the company's management positions in the US are held by women. 

23. Workday

This IT and software services platform has 15,200 employees. The company has signed a CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion Pledge, the largest CEO-driven business effort to advance diversity and inclusion in the workplace. 

22. Synchrony Financial 

Consumer financial services company, Synchrony Financial, has 18,500 employees. Two-thirds of its board are women or minorities and employees can join one of eight diversity networks to amplify underrepresented voices.

21. American Express 

In 2024, US banking company, American Express, has maintained 100% pay equity across genders globally and across races and ethnicities in the US for the third consecutive year. This earns it a place among the best companies for diversity and inclusion.

20. Vizient 

Healthcare and social services company, Vizient, is also a strong champion for diversity with several Diversity Networking Associations set up to support women, people of color, LGBTQ staff, and those with disabilities. 

19. Procter & Gamble 

Founded in 1837, this packaged goods company is the oldest on this list. However, in terms of inclusion, Procter & Gamble has kept with modern times through efforts to hire multicultural management. 

18. Akamai Technologies 

The IT and software services company, Akamai Technology, has a workforce comprised of over 40% people of color. This makes it one of the best companies for diversity and inclusion, according to Forbes. 

17. Humana 

Insurance group Humana was established in 1961 and currently has 67,000 employees. In total, 66% of those in management positions are women. Humana is also part of the Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs) Partnership Challenge.

16. Miami University 

Also home to the Farmer School of Business, Miami University runs several diversity and inclusion initiatives including an Intercultural Initiative and LGBTQ+ Initiative.

15. Ally Financial

Bank holding company, Ally Financial, is transparent in its representation and not to its detriment. As many as 36% of board directors and 50% of its executive council are women or people of color. 

14. Intel

Intel is a multinational semiconductor chip manufacturer with 131,900 employees. The company has a goal in place to spend $2 billion with diverse-owned suppliers globally by the end of 2030.

13. Cummins

Engineering and manufacturing company, Cummins, offers diversity training for its 75,500 employees in LGBTQ+ Safe Leader Training, Preventing Sexual Harassment, and The Spectrum of Diversity and Inclusion. 

12. Brown-Forman

Family-owned spirits and wine manufacturer, Brown-Forman has employees in 42 countries around the world. It has set targets to increase global senior female leadership representation to 40% and US representation of racial and ethnic minorities in management to 25%. Forbes ranks Brown-Forman among America's best companies for diversity and inclusion. 

11. American Waterworks

This US utilities company is recognized by the global nonprofit, 50/50 Women on Boards (50/50WOB), for its Gender-Balanced Board of Directors. 

10. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota 

An insurance company, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota is working towards creating an internal advisory committee to promote internal racial and health equity.

9. TD Bank

Founded in 1855, American national bank, TD Bank, has 95,000 employees. The firm aims to amplify Black voices and success through educational programs, training, and summits. It also works with Indigenous Communities through the TD Ready Commitment to open doors to financial, social, and health-related opportunities.

8. Keysight Technologies 

A semiconductor and electronics manufacturer, Keysight Technologies is dedicated to creating a diverse workforce. Over 50% of the firm's current employees identify as underrepresented minorities, making it one of the best companies for diversity and inclusion in the US. 

7. American Electric Power

This utilities company has 6,500 employees and has spent over $800 million procuring goods and services from diverse suppliers. 

6. Mutual of Omaha 

An insurance company founded in 1909, Mutual of Omaha is also a participant in the CEO Action Pledge for Diversity & Inclusion signed by Workday. 

5. Salesforce 

This IT services company employees 72,000 workers worldwide. More than 50% of US Salesforce employees are made up of underrepresented groups and the firm has also introduced a new multi-year global gender goal to reach 40% women-identifying and non-binary employees by the end of 2026.

4. Edgewell Personal Care 

A packaged goods company, Edgewell Personal Care has over 6,000 employees across 50 countries around the world.

A popular banking service well known across the globe, PayPal has achieved 100% global gender pay equity and US ethnic pay equity for five consecutive years, making it Forbes' third best company for diversity and inclusion. 

2. TIAA

Through its Diverse Supplier Academy, banking and financial services company TIAA connects diverse-owned businesses with mentors who provide expert guidance on business goals. It also offers scholarships for diverse suppliers, business owners and underrepresented entrepreneurs to attend the Tuck Diversity Business Programs at Dartmouth College.

1. Progressive

Insurance group Progressive is consistently recognized for its strong DEI focus, which earns it the top spot in this list of the best companies for diversity and inclusion in 2024.

The company strives to create a culture of inclusion through Employee Resource Groups dedicated to minority groups including the Asian American Network, LGBT+ Network, and Disability Awareness Network. It also hosts company-wide Courageous Conversations and a DEI Speakers Bureau for discussions surrounding biases, stereotypes, and development of inclusive behaviors.
