Alumni Perspectives Survey

This semiannual survey of alumni who have previously participated in one of our Global Graduate surveys is designed to:

  • Document characteristics for first/current jobs
  • Track changes in responsibilities, promotions, and salary over time
  • Assess the benefits of management education
  • Monitor alumni educational needs

Each year, about 3/4 of those surveyed in their final year of school express interest in participating in longitudinal studies tracking their career decisions and job satisfaction.

Major Findings

  • The majority of alumni indicated their graduate business school prepared them for their professional careers. In addition 91 percent of alumni indicated that they have recommended their graduate business school to somone interested in pursuing graduate management education.
  • The vast majority (90%) of alumni indicated they were employed at the time of the survey- 83 percent worked for an organization and 7 percent were self-employed. Of the 10 percent that indicated they were not employed, 84 percent were actively searching for employment. 
  • About half of alumni have received a promotion. On average, 90 percent indicated tey received an increase in pay as a part of their promotion. Overall, alumni reported a median salary of US$91,300.
  • According to employed alumni, the two most important interpersonal skills needed for their current job are the ability to work with others and the ability to influence others.

  • Comprehensive Data Report—data tables and summaries of overall findings from the September 2009 survey.
  • Survey Report—combined findings from April and September 2009 surveys for context and a holistic view of major results.

GMAC conducts this survey twice a year; the findings are released in three reports: a data report for the April survey, another data report for the September survey, and one Survey Report based on findings from the two.

Who uses the survey results?

Survey results provide invaluable feedback on skills assessments and gaps, acceptance in the job market, and overall job satisfaction. These reports are frequently used to help drive strategic decision-making processes in graduate business schools.
