  • D’Amore-McKim Adds Eight to Faculty. Northeastern University’s D’Amore-McKim School of Business has added eight new full-time faculty members. The new faculty members have each earned significant achievements in their respective fields. The new members are: Paula Caligiuri, Distinguished Professor of Global Leadership, International Business and Strategy; Yi-Da Chen, Assistant Professor of Information Management; Devon Erickson, Assistant Professor of Accounting; Linlin Ma, Assistant Professor of Finance; Anahit “Anya” Mkrtchyan, Assistant Professor of Finance; Chris Riedl, Assistant Professor, D’Amore-McKim School of Business (Supply Chain and Information Management Group) and College of Computer and Information Science; Nancy Sirianni, Assistant Professor of Marketing; and Andrew Trotman, Assistant Professor of Accounting. 
  • Warwick Case Competition to Start Offering Prize Money. The Warwick Business School has announced that this year’s Case Competition will offer £4,000 in prize money for the winning team. After the success of last year’s inaugural event the WBS International Case Competition will again be focusing on healthcare and has been boosted by sponsorship from GE Healthcare, a subsidiary of US conglomerate General Electric. The competition is open to 12 teams, who will be split into two semi-final groups with the top two from each going through to the final. Ideally the teams of four will not be made up of just MBA students but include people from other departments in the same university like science, engineering or medicine. The deadline for entries is February 21 with the case competition being held on April 25-26 at Warwick Business School. 
  • Salaries of Executive MBA Graduates Rise by 14 Percent. According to an Executive MBA Council 2013 Student Exit Benchmarking Survey, salary and bonus packages of recent Executive MBA (EMBA) program graduates have increased by 14 percent from program start to program end. The average salary and bonus package at program start for students in the 2013 survey was US$140,310. By the end of the program, the average salary and bonus package rose toUS$159,963. The EMBA Council conducts the Student Exit Benchmarking Survey to track the perceptions and opinions of EMBA program graduates and to help measure the return on investment of the degree. The survey included 2,647 students from 88 EMBA Programs. In addition to salary increases, more than half (51 percent) of the graduates received new responsibilities and 38 percent a promotion during their time in the EMBA Programs. EMBA graduates also report high levels of satisfaction with their EMBA experience, ranking program quality (8.3 on a 10-point scale), willingness to recommend their program to a colleague or friend (8.4) and likelihood of supporting the program as alumni (8.2). 
  • The Ideal Environment for a Budding Entrepreneur. Are great entrepreneurs born or made? Neither, says Rice University’s Bill Glick, dean of the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business. In his regular column in Smart Business magazine, Glick describes the ideal environment for a budding entrepreneur. It’s the combination of nurturing entrepreneurial community, education, and opportunity that add up to the best environment. “Passionate entrepreneurs seek environments where they can learn from others, collaborate, and takes calculated risks to test their ideas,” he said. 
  • Kenan-Flagler’s Labro Receives AICPA Award. Eva Labro, associate professor of accounting at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, received the Greatest Potential Impact on Management Accounting Practice Award from the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). Labro received the award for a paper that explores costing rules of thumb that are used but not commonly understood (“Evaluating Heuristics Used When Designing Product Costing Systems,” which she co-wrote with Ramji Balakrishnan of the University of Iowa and Stephen Hansen of the Naval Postgraduate School). 
  • University of Tampa MBA Students Win ACG Cup. For the second year in a row, a University of Tampa team of MBA students won the Tampa Bay ACG (Association for Corporate Growth) Cup competition. For the win, the team, which consisted of Kate Demick, Miriaku Obioha, Matt Vail and Adelaide Yego, had to value a smaller, underperforming public company, assess its business and financial opportunities and risks, and advise its board on the value and wisdom of an offer to take the company private against an alternative offer to greatly increase its leverage in order to seize some potential market opportunities. The ACG Cup is a case study competition designed to give students from leading MBA programs across the country real world experience and invaluable insights into mergers and acquisitions, investment banking, financial advisory and private equity. The examining panel consisted of private equity, banking, accounting and consulting executives from the ACG professional membership.
