Minnesota Starts “MBA in Two” Program

The Carlson School of Management and the University Honors Program at the University of Minnesota have created MBA in Two, a deferred-admissions MBA program for university honors students. Students apply during their senior year in the honors program. If admitted, they enter the Carlson full-time MBA program after completing two years of professional work experience. During those two years, students will take part in career coaching, professional development, and mentorships with the support of the Carlson Graduate Business Career Center, along with participation in student clubs and organizations. The program is targeted to UM candidates from any major who have demonstrated leadership and collaborative capabilities and are interested in pursuing careers that require management or leadership skills.

Women in the Business School Pipeline, Revisited

With the number (106,800) and proportion (41.4 percent) of GMAT exams taken by women hitting an all-time high in the testing year ending June 30, 2011, the GMAC Professional Development Team will hold a free webinar on women in the business school talent pipeline.  The webinar, which will feature GMAC research data as well as observations from Elissa Sangster, executive director of the Forté Foundation, will look at how demographic shifts can inform how management programs recruit women of different age groups, world regions, and academic and career backgrounds.

The session updates a similar webinar held two years ago and is being offered by popular demand. The one-hour session will be held Wednesday, March 14, at 11:30 am Eastern Daylight Time. Registration is open to those at schools that use the GMAT exam in their admission processes.  

Guanghua Selected for Campus Asia Pilot Project

Guanghua School of Management of Peking University has been selected to participate in one of 10 new projects designed to promote regional educational integration among schools in Asia as part of the Campus Asia program. Guanghua will work with the School of Commerce and Management of Hitotsubashi University, and College of Business Administration of Seoul National University on student exchanges and other forms of cooperation.

Survey Shows Salary Increases for EMBA Graduates

Salaries and bonus packages of recent Executive MBA (EMBA) program graduates increased by 16.3 percent from program start to program end, according to 3,212 students from 102 programs who participated in the Executive MBA Council’s 2011 Student Exit Benchmarking Survey.

The average salary and bonus package at program start for students in 2011 survey was US$135,323. By the end of the program, the average salary and bonus package rose to US$157,423. Both average starting and ending salaries increased from those reported in the 2010 survey—US$127,955 in average starting salary and bonuses and US$142,534 in average ending salary and bonuses, an 11.4 percent increase. In addition, 37 percent of students reported receiving promotions during their time in the program.

How to Build a Better Flash Drive

Not too long ago, flash drives were expensive, clunky, and didn’t hold that much memory. But even while the drives themselves have come down in price and gained in gigabytes, their basic structure hasn’t changed all that much. Recently, a group of MBA students in Suffolk University’s Sawyer Business School accepted a challenge from a technology executive to see if they could squeeze more utility out of this now-ubiquitous tool.

Eight students in Professor Stephen Golden’s Global Innovation & New Product Development in Virtual Team course divided into two teams, with each group charged with developing a different new-use model for flash drives. One team focused on technical innovation, while the other created a new design. The results? One group developed a flash drive that functions as a transmitter rather than a storage device and was designed to make it easier to transfer files between electronic devices. The second group developed the “USB-To-Go,” which clips onto cell phone cases in a product redesign intended to be convenient, cost-effective, and less likely to become lost or stolen.

Putting students in touch with factories, design houses, distributors, and patent attorneys, the course ended with presentations about the designs to potential investors and product development teams from major retailers. Both student groups intend to move toward commercializing their products.

ESADE Launches Innovations Blog

Researchers from the Institute for Innovation and Knowledge Management at ESADE have started a blog on innovation and knowledge produced through research at the school. The blog is part of the ESADE Blogs project, an initiative that in the coming months will roll out thematic blogs on social innovation, global economy and geopolitics, entrepreneurship, and development, among other topic areas.

A US$33 million grant from the Lilly Endowment will support renovation and expansion of undergraduate facilities at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.

Two gifts totaling US$4.5 million from Janice M. and Joseph T. Willett and Susanna and Evans Y. Lam will support student scholarships and faculty positions at the Simon School of Business and the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Rochester.

With pledged gifts totaling US$1 million, the Deloitte Foundation has established an endowment for the J.M. Tull School of Accounting in the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia.

Four donors—Mac and Susan Van Wielingen and their family, ARC Resources Ltd., ARC Financial Corp., and Kevin and Nadine Brown—have pledged C$9.5 million to create the Canadian Center for Advanced Leadership in Business at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business.

Daria L. Foster has committed US$2 million to support St. Bonaventure University’s School of Business. Half the gift will help construction of a new building for the school; the balance will support academic programs.

Concordia College in Moorhead Minnesota has announced a significant gift from the Barry Foundation to fund a new auditorium and scholars program for Concordia’s Offutt School of Business.

The Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University is partnering with XLRI School of Business & Human Resources, Jamshedpur on a 15-month master’s degree program in organizational transformation and leadership … Cass Business School Dubai, part of City University London, has announced the launch of Cass Consulting in the Middle East and North Africa. … Clemson University’s College of Business and Behavioral Science has introduced an MBA in Entrepreneurship and Innovation concentration that incorporates traditional finance, marketing, human resources and management knowledge with immersive, entrepreneurial-based coursework. … The Colorado State University College of Business has announced a certificate program in Strategic Organizational Leadership, taking place this spring. … Later this month, Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business will inaugurate a three-day Executive Certificate course, Embracing Change: Leading Organizations in Turbulent Times. Sessions will be offered in Boston, England, India, and China … Howard University has started an online executive MBA program. … Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and the IU School of Education have created a collaborative program to prepare school leaders equipped with the latest management and leadership skills. The IU Executive EdD program enables students in the education school, many of whom are planning for careers as superintendents and other administrative education roles, to earn a master’s degree in strategic management at the Kelley School while earning an EdD in Educational Leadership. … INSEAD plans to launch a new Asia section of its GEMBA program. … Pepperdine University’s Private Capital Markets Project and Graziadio School of Business and Management are partnering with Dun & Bradstreet Credibility Corp. to develop research on the national economy as well as private capital access for small and medium sized businesses. The Graziadio School has also announced its spring 2012 portfolio of executive education offerings, which includes certificate programs in Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility and Innovative Leadership, as well as a Sustainable Business Strategy Immersion Program in Japan.

The partnership allows students who complete the Project Management Certificate Program at UC Irvine Extension the opportunity to apply elective credits to Brandman University’s MBA and/or Master in Organizational Leadership.
