ISB Starts Pre-Admission Option for Young Leaders

The Indian School of Business has created a “Young Leaders Programme,” which will offer pre-admission for promising undergraduate students to ISB’s one-year Post Graduate Programme in Management. Students will be selected based on individual evaluations, coupled with analysis of academic and analytical skills, GMAT performance, essays, video presentation, and personal interviews. Those chosen will be required to work for at least a year and nine months before entering the program. While they are working, they will attend programs at the ISB campus every six months to help them network, build leadership skills, and explore career options.

Fordham Project to Explore the Purpose of Business

The Schools of Business at Fordham University have started an ambitious five-year project that will take a broad look at the role and responsibility of business. Looking deeply at business in the context of the evolving global society, the Fordham University Consortium on the Purpose of Business is designed to stimulate “critical, creative, and constructive dialogue” about business in the 21st century.

David Gautschi, dean of Fordham’s Graduate School of Business Administration, told Fordham Online that the project would explore “the interactions of market systems, technological progress, state policy decisions, and institutions that combine to define the contexts in which business is conducted.”

The consortium includes scholars, media correspondents, political advisers, corporate executives, and religious leaders from several countries in the US, Europe, South America, and Africa. Its next conference, to be held in April in Istanbul, will focus on “Islam and the Market.”

Haas Offers Free Continuing Ed for Alumni

Starting with the class of 2011, the Haas School of Business at the University of California-Berkeley will offer its MBA alumni free continuing education through the school’s Center for Executive Education. Students will be eligible for two days of free executive education programs within the first five years after graduation.

Harvard Business School Fine-tunes MBA Program

As reported by Harbus, the independent student weekly,  faculty at Harvard Business School have approved two changes in the school’s MBA program. Starting this fall, the school will roll out a new required course for first-year students called FIELD (Field Immersion Experiences for Leadership Development). The course will include a global immersion experience during the school’s January term. The second change, which introduces a switch in the school’s calendar from two semesters to four quarters, opens opportunities for faculty to create more flexible learning experiences.

Contest Seeks Videos on How MBAs are Changing the World  

The Global Business School Network has announced the MBA Challenge Video Contest for MBA students and recent graduates.  Students can submit a video showing how their project, start-up enterprise, or new career is making an impact in the developing world and how their MBA experience helped make it a reality. One MBA will be selected to present the video at the sixth annual GBSN Conference co-hosted by IPADE Business School in Mexico City on June 21, 2011.


Columbia University has received US$10 million from the Richard Paul and Ellen S. Richman Private Family Foundation. The gift will be used to establish the Richard Paul Richman Center for Business, Law, and Public Policy, which will be jointly administered by Columbia Business School and Columbia Law School.

BNY Mellon has announced a 10-year, US$1 million commitment for the development of corporate social responsibility programs and education at the University of Pittsburgh.

A US$1 million endowment established by the Forest Akers Trust will help fund student business plans at Michigan State University.

Alfred Sorensen has donated C$5 million to the Alberta School of Business at the University of Alberta. The donation will support a named chair in energy, environmental, and reputational risk management and a fund that will support student international exchanges, study tours abroad, and global internship positions.


  • The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University has created the Kellogg Social Entrepreneurship Award, which will provide US$80,000 to help a Kellogg student launch a socially responsible business. Award recipients will also receive mentoring support from the school’s Levy Social Entrepreneurship Lab.
  • Boston University has announced a scholarship program that will support enrollment in the school’s Two-Year Public & Nonprofit MBA program by staff and alumni of City Year, the national youth service organization that operates in 20 US cities as part of AmeriCorps. Three scholarships worth at least US$25,000 will be awarded per year.
  • INSEAD has joined iTunes U, a dedicated area of the iTunes Store that offers free audio and video content. INSEAD plans to post video interviews with faculty, conferences and lectures, research, and content from the school’s online newsletter, Knowledge. Also planned are “Leadercasts”—one-on-one video interviews led by INSEAD faculty—and “The Big Interview,” a program segment featuring video interviews with prominent business and government leaders. Content will be available in English, Chinese, and Arabic.
  • Two business schools have announced new blogs to spotlight student achievements. MBA students at IESE recently launched a blog to highlight the school’s annual Doing Good and Doing Well conference, which focuses on responsible business and is the largest student-led event of its kind. As its name suggests, the new Haas Achieves blog at the Haas School of Business at the University of California-Berkeley will document accomplishments by students and alumni from Berkeley’s MBA programs.
  • Among experts who are sharing their insights in academe, Jeff Zucker, president and CEO of NBC Universal, has been named an Executive in Residence at Columbia Business School, and the University of California-Berkeley has announced that former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and her husband, Daniel Mulhern, will teach interdisciplinary courses in the university’s schools of law, business, and public policy.


At American University, the Kogod School of Business and the School of International Service have created an interdisciplinary course, “Global Innovation Without Frontiers,” aimed at expanding graduate students’ knowledge of European business and politics, technology, new media, and innovation issues. The course includes travel to Paris and Prague. … Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business is launching a collaborative program for professors and businesses, the Innovative Business Accelerator, that will provide business, scientific, and technical services for start-up and existing businesses. … The Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University is collaborating with Art Center College of Design in Pasadena on a course,“Creating New Competitive Advantage through Design Thinking,” that will be taught by Drucker School Academic Dean and Professor of Management Hideki Yamawaki. … The Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University has inked a partnership with the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business that includes an MBA student exchange and a certificate program hosted by Johnson for an EMBA group from CKGSB. … Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business and the sustainable technology company Abengoa have partnered to create a custom executive education program in project management for the company’s employees. The school also announced that is has partnered with NII Holdings, Inc., one of the world’s leading providers of fully integrated mobile communications services in Latin America, to create a two-year custom executive education program in global leadership development. …

Harvard Business School has announced an executive education program, Building Businesses in Emerging Markets, which will be offered in April. … IE Business School has signed a collaboration agreement with British publisher Palgrave Macmillan to help share research results from IE’s faculty with a broader audience. … IESE Business School has announced its 2011 schedule of short, focused programs, which will cover such topics as innovation, operations, creating effective virtual teams, and sustainable business strategies. A new offering this year is “Arts and Cultural Management: The Business Side of Leading Cultural Organizations,” which will be held in New York City this July. … The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, and the School of Management at Zhejiang University have announced a global senior management certificate program, Technology & Innovation Leadership Beyond Borders. The joint program will include international business education and professional development immersion experiences at each of the three institutions and networking opportunities for participants. … The Indian School of Business has signed a memorandum of understanding with Coca-Cola India to establish the Coca-Cola ISB Retail Academy at the ISB campus in Hyderabad. The Academy will train mid-level professionals in retail management. … The Sloan School of Management at MIT has signed a partnership agreement with the Sabanci School of Management at Sabanci University in Turkey. The alliance is designed to strengthen the Turkish school’s capacity in management education and bolster its industry outreach in Eastern Europe and the Middle East while providing learning opportunities in Turkey for MIT Sloan faculty and students. … A seminar at New York University’s Stern School of Business, “Global Markets and Normative Frameworks,” will enable students to exchange views with leaders from industry, media, government, and academia. The seminar conveners include the CEO of a private equity firm and CNBC anchorperson Maria Bartiromo, and speakers will include Paul Volcker, most recently the chairman of President Obama’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board; Gillian Tett, US managing editor of the Financial Times; and Maurice “Hank” Greenberg, chairman and CEO of C. The North Carolina State University Jenkins MBA program in the Poole College of Management is accepting applications for the inaugural semester this fall of its online MBA program. Students will complete their degrees in two years, with the same academic requirements as the school’s classroom-based MBA programs for working professionals. The Jenkins MBA program also recently announced several joint programs, including a Master of Industrial Engineering/MBA degree, a joint MBA with a Master of Microbial Biotechnology, and a joint MBA and Master of Veterinary Medicine. … The College of Business at San Francisco State University has launched a Center for Ethical and Sustainable Business. … The Fox School of Business at Temple University is continuing its community outreach through an ongoing partnership with the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce (GPCC) and co-sponsored a GPCC executive leadership forum, Women in the Workforce, in December. … The American Express Foundation has announced a grant to Thunderbird School of Global Management to support expansion of a weeklong leadership development program for rising stars from the social sector and nonprofit organizations. … The A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University has announced a Master of Management in Energy degree. The intensive one-year program, which launches this summer, is targeted at new or recent college graduates. …

In the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona, the University of Arizona Professional Development Academy and Accidental Trainer have partnered to offer a two-day certificate workshop, “Influencing with Intent,” for managers and facilitators who want to improve their communication, presentation, and leadership skills. … The Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge has announced a  Postgraduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship. … The Center for Social Value Creation at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is expanding its Social Venture Consulting Program, in partnership with, an organization that provides free technologies and resources to nonprofits. The experiential learning program matches MBA students with nonprofit organizations around the country for semester-long consulting projects. … The Wharton Interactive Media Initiative, a research center at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, has expanded to become the Wharton Customer Analytics Initiative. The center is designed to help researchers and business understand how to leverage the data that they collect about customer behavior. … The Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis is offering a new certificate program, Financial Skills for General Managers. …

The American University of Beirut has created the Samih Darwazah Center for Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship at its Suliman S. Olayan School of Business. … Colorado Technical University has started a Master of Science in Management program. … Arab reports that Jeddah-based Effat University has received approval for its first graduate program, an Executive Masters in Islamic Financial Management (XIFM). The program will be delivered at the university in collaboration with Rotterdam School of Management and Ecole Supérieure des Affaires in Beirut. … Hult International Business School has started a Master in Social Entrepreneurship program. … The Management School at Queen’s University Belfast has created the China Management Research Institute, designed to fast-track business opportunities in China for companies from Northern Ireland. … SUNY Oswego now offers an online MBA. … The Bryan School of Business and Economics at the University of North Carolina Greensboro is migrating its master’s degree in information technology and management program to be online-only.
