Best-selling ‘Official GMAT Guide’ Series Now Accessible to the Visually Impaired

The Official GMAT Guide series is now available in the Digital Talking Book format for those with visual impairments or reading-based learning disabilities.

The assistive “talking-book” technology presents book content on computer, with the text highlighted as a computer-synthesized voice reads along and provides detailed descriptions of mathematical terms, figures, and other necessary content. The system, developed by assistive technology pioneer gh LLC, allows people to control the speed of the computer’s voice and magnify text and images in the book to up to 16 times their original size.

“The Graduate Management Admission Council is all about creating access to graduate business education through the GMAT exam. By making the Official GMAT Study Guides accessible to those with visual impairments or reading-based learning disabilities, the Digital Talking Books extend access to business education even more,” said Kendra Johnson, director of GMAT Test Accommodations.

The Official Guides, which include The Official Guide to GMAT Review 12th Edition, The Official Guide for GMAT Verbal Review, 2nd Edition, and The Official Guide for GMAT Quantitative Review, 2nd Edition, feature retired questions from previous GMAT exams, along with detailed answer explanations. GMAC developed the Digital Talking Books with input from the visually impaired community through a collaboration with the National Center for Accessible Media at Boston public broadcaster WBGH, and ACT Inc., which manages the development of test content for GMAC.

Many months in the making, the Digital Talking Books are based on the DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) international standard for delivering printed material for those with visual impairments developed by the Daisy Consortium of Zurich. They are bundled with gh’s ReadHear player, which uses MathSpeak, a set of rules on verbalizing mathematical expressions.
The Digital Talking Books are available by request to test takers with accommodations needs at the same price as the printed Guides by contacting
