TeamMBA Initiative Expands to Full Month

TeamMBA Month 2009 will be a large-scale, global initiative designed to raise awareness about how effective business schools are in the business of giving back to their communities. Once again, GMAC will serve as the clearinghouse for communications about TeamMBA Month to the media.

“Now is the time for schools to plan an activity in April that can highlight their commitment to the principle of ‘giving back,’” says Melissa Knueven, who manages TeamMBA at GMAC. Among appropriate activities, she says:

  • Community service—such as volunteering at food banks, beautifying parks, cleaning up a public school, building/refurbishing homes for those in need, and holding blood drives
  • Environmental projects—including planting trees, implementing a recycling program on campus, and related projects with a “green” focus
  • Fundraising/collections for a cause— including fundraising runs/walks/bike rides and collecting school supplies or books for children in developing countries
  • Consulting—using skills learned in MBA programs to build sustainable business models for small businesses in local communities or developing countries

“TeamMBA Month is a chance for business schools to show their creativity as well as commitment to community service,” Knueven says. “Schools can leverage the initiative to challenge or collaborate with neighboring or other schools to have even greater impact on a particular cause. There might also be opportunities for schools to connect with alumni for greater reach.”
