TeamMBA is Running Strong in 2008-09

GMAC started TeamMBA in 2005 as a way to celebrate, promote, and publicize the many ways through which b-school volunteers demonstrate how they are engaged, caring, and committed to social responsibility. Three years later, TeamMBA is a network of b-schools and their students unified in the goal of giving back.

In late August, TeamMBA received the Team Champion Award for fundraising in the Philadelphia LiveStrong Challenge, in which 5,000 walkers, runners and cyclists raised more than US$3 million to support cancer survivors and cancer research. The TeamMBA contingent—with students from Villanova, Penn State, and Rutgers universities along with GMAC staff, including President and CEO David Wilson—raised more than US$67,000. The Team Champion Award was presented by Lance Armstrong at a dinner the night before the activities.

Many schools have shared news of TeamMBA service projects that have already taken place in the 2008-2009 academic year:

  • MBA students at the University of Maryland mentored children and spent the better part of day sprucing up a local elementary school.
  • Students in the MBA program at Washington University in St. Louis conducted a variety of community service activities during “Olin Serves Day.”
  • Students at Tulane University served various community organizations during its annual volunteer day.
  • Future MBAs at London Business School volunteered with conservation projects in local parks and assisted charities in the community with business development activities.
  • At the University at Buffalo, students took part in a charity walk for suicide prevention, while students at the University of Illinois at Chicago walked in support of AIDS research.
  • A TeamMBA bike ride at Boston University benefitted Boston public schools.
  • Students from the Mason School of Business at the College of William & Mary gave their time to beautify local York River State Park.
  • Students at the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College sorted food for distribution at the Second Harvest Food Bank.

As always, GMAC encourages every school to send news about TeamMBA activities—email us at or call +1(703) 245-4343.

Plans are coming into focus for the 2009 TeamMBA Award. Presented annually to a school that exemplifies the highest ideals of giving back through community service and cause-related activities by its students, the award is announced in June at the GMAC Annual Industry Conference.

Planning is also well under way for the 2009 TeamMBA Week. Held in April, TeamMBA Week unites the graduate business education community in a global effort to raise public awareness of social responsibility and community engagement.

Now is the time to make sure your school is on the list of graduate business schools that are showing their commitment to social responsibility and community engagement. Sign up to receive dates and details for TeamMBA Week 2009.
