Team MBA Goes International

The tournament’s altruistic outcome dovetails with the mission of Team MBA, the Council’s program to celebrate and promote the contributions that MBA students make to their communities. By sponsoring the European event, GMAC hopes to encourage students abroad to adopt the Team MBA brand as an umbrella for their community service outreach.

“We don’t often hear about the good things that MBAs do—and they do a lot!” says Team MBA coordinator Melissa Knueven. That’s where Team MBA comes in. The program is designed to encourage volunteerism and public outreach by MBA students. GMAC provides t-shirts for MBA students, faculty, and staff who collaborate in community service or participate in charity events, and helps promote the events. Team MBA is just one of the ways GMAC promotes goodwill for the MBA.

This year’s MBA Tournament—the 17th annual competition—takes place May 17–20 outside Paris in Jouy-en-Josas, France. The tournament supports Gol de Letra, a Brazilian organization that helps children and teenagers in low-income neighborhoods. Event planners expect as many as 1,600 student participants, representing as many as 70 countries. They’ll compete in 24 team and individual sports.

Whether it is students gathering in France for the MBA Tournament to support a humanitarian organization in Brazil or students, faculty and staff joining together to help rebuild flood-ravaged New Orleans in the United States, Team MBA is the common thread that binds MBA students in a commitment to social responsibility.

Since Team MBA was established in 2005, more than 215 people have contributed nearly 3,000 hours working in food banks, building homes, and raising more than US$200,000 for cancer research and other worthy causes.
