MET Fund i2i Challenge Grant Winners

MET Fund awards more than US$7.1 million for implementation of Phase 1 ideas to improve management education.

Below are the 12 winning proposals from Phase 2 of the GMAC MET Fund i2i Challenge.  More than US$7.1 million in grants were awarded to non-profit schools and education providers for developing the most innovative graduate management education programs inspired by winning Phase 1 concepts. Grant recipients represent business schools and organizations in the U.S., Canada, Spain, Italy, India and Botswana.

The institutions will implement programs focused on creating social responsibility and service learning opportunities in graduate management education, building new pathways for military veterans into business leadership and encouraging global collaboration among educational institutions.

Abhyudaya ("Prosperity and Development of All")
June 2012-May 2015

Abhyudaya is a year-long program through which the first year MBA students at the S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR) mentor underprivileged children in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation schools of Mumbai’s K-West Ward. The mentoring program aims to address urban poverty and foster social responsibility and character development through experiential learning among business school students. GMAC will fund the educational components of the program, which will be mandatory for all MBA candidates.

Projects for Good
April 2012-June 2014

Net Impact, an international network of top graduate business schools, undergraduate campuses and professionals, will create a virtual marketplace that matches non-profit organizations in need of innovative ideas and business solutions with teams of interested MBA students. Projects for Good will provide students with real-world learning opportunities that cultivate ethical leadership and experience using their business skills to advance solutions to social challenges. Net Impact currently supports students on over 25 campuses who undertake projects such as developing a fundraising strategy for a local Habitat for Humanity or a web implementation strategy for a local Humane Society. Funding from GMAC will enable us to scale an existing program to 100s of business schools.

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore – ALTIS (Milan)
Embedding Entrepreneurship in African Management Education (implementation in Nairobi, Kenya)
July 2012-December 2014

The Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, in partnership with Tanzaga College of the Catholic University of East Africa, will foster collaboration among business schools in Nairobi, Kenya, Loyola Institute of Business Administration in Chennai, India, and Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California to offer the first executive MBA in Social Entrepreneurship in Africa. The international scope of the program will enable students to form new business networks, giving them an opportunity to locate new sources of financing, customers and suppliers.

University of Botswana, Faculty of Business (Gaborone)
Development & Delivery of Business Education and Executive Development Programmes in the Graduate School of Business
October 2012-March 2014

The University of Botswana aims to promote and expand international graduate management education nationwide, increase program access and enhance capacity building for underrepresented populations to fuel smart business growth in Botswana and throughout the region more broadly. The University through the Graduate School of Business will develop a curriculum for Graduate Management Education and Executive Development Programs in areas that are critical to the needs of both the country and the continent. Ultimately, the program will support the continuous and long term training of the local workforce for national and regional capacity building. In addition, the program will facilitate the development of local teaching materials, business cases and simulations for business and management university coursework throughout Africa.

The Global Integrative Module
April 2012-January 2015

The Global Integrative Module will propose a joint teaching and learning experience between ESADE and three other international business schools in the E.U., the U.S. and East Asia through an online platform. This program will require students (undergraduate, MSc and MBA) to integrate knowledge and competencies acquired in various previously pursued courses to evaluate and establish a personal position on a global management challenge. The objective is that students will be confronted with an authentic problem, whose complexity will require their addressing it from the social, political, people management and economic dimensions. Students will work in teams composed of students from different institutions (and thus from diverse cultural backgrounds) and from different academic programs (and thus of various profile and equipped with different kinds of expertise) using both conceptual and practical knowledge derived from stakeholders whom they will also be required to interview to construct their positioning on the matter. This program will be based on the transfer of educational innovation knowledge from previous success implementations of the Integrative Module in the curriculum of the Bachelor of Business Administration at ESADE, and will take place during two academic years.

Management Education Collaboration Network (MECNET)
April 2012-December 2012

The Management Education Collaboration Network (MECNET) is an online, cloud-based point of convergence for business faculty to share ideas and best practices. The program will highlight significant developments in graduate management education including new learning technologies, globalization, changing demographics and sustainability issues. This system is specifically based on the MET’s Phase I Cloud Business Networking idea. MECNET will provide the management education community with a dynamic vehicle to drive innovation regarding student learning through the sharing and exchanging of ideas. The proposed effort is built around the following three core tasks: a) Extensive literature review on collaborative learning networks; b) Detailed survey and analysis of stakeholder attitudes towards collaborative learning networks; and c) Preparation of MECNET requirements and specifications including the identification of candidate implementation vendors.

The Regents of the University of California, San Diego, Rady School of Management (San Diego)
A Whole New World of Opportunity: Collaboration in the Virtual World
May 2012-April 2014

This project will create a virtual campus to foster collaboration across graduate management programs internationally. Students will be able to navigate an online, interactive environment that will offer opportunities to receive coaching and attend seminars and other group learning activities. The first phase of the project will include the development and launch of the virtual environment, and the second phase will be a “soft opening” of the environment, including participation from a select number of international universities, followed by a grand opening when the platform is opened and marketed to interested universities.

University of Texas at Tyler (Tyler)
Enhancing Relevance in the Graduate Business Curriculum through Factory Videos
August 2012-February 2013

The University of Texas at Tyler will create a virtual manufacturing environment using video feeds from an existing factory in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico to illustrate concepts discussed in graduate management coursework. The project aims to immerse students into the factory’s operations, make the classroom concepts more relevant and to personalize the experience by introducing factory staff.

University of Waterloo, Conrad Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology Centre (Waterloo)
VIP: The Virtual Incubation Program at the University of Waterloo
October 2012-June 2017

The Virtual Incubation Program (VIP) is a global, online network of students, community groups, local entrepreneurs and international university partners, designed to support the development and launch of new businesses. The program will be administered by the Conrad Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology Centre (Conrad) at the University of Waterloo.

Veterans' Education

SUNY Empire State College Foundation (Saratoga Springs)
Credit Where Credit is Due: Veteran and Service Member Pathway to the MBA
April 2012-December 2014

SUNY Empire State College will develop a program which will award graduate-level credit toward an MBA for relevant military training. The program will assign American Council on Education credit values for military training specialties that are relevant to civilian business leadership, reducing the time and tuition costs of program completion for many veterans. The program will also replace a traditional introductory MBA course with one specifically designed to serve veterans transitioning to civilian life and business leadership. The program's overall goal is to ease veterans' transition into civilian business leadership.

TeamMBA: The Business of Giving Back Syracuse University (Syracuse)
Veteran Employment through Modified Graduate Management Tracks (VET-MGMT)
July 2012-June 2015

The Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) and the Whitman School of Management (Whitman) at Syracuse University (SU) will partner to offer customized management certificate and degree programs for veterans. Based on input from employers and collaboration with educators across various sectors, the project will design MBA-credit bearing or certificate coursework tracks from colleges and disciplines to leverage veterans’ technical training and leadership experience in development of business leadership skills. This partnership includes faculty, staff, coursework and operations experience from several Syracuse programs, including the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism, the National Security Studies Program, the Global Enterprise Technology Program and the Veterans Technology Program, and from several Syracuse University colleges, including the Falk School, the iSchool, LCSmith College of Engineering and Computer Science, the College of Law, the Maxwell School, and University College.

University of South Florida at St. Petersburg (St. Petersburg)
Leading in a Civilian Context: A Socially Responsible MBA for Returning Veterans
June 2012-May 2014

The University of South Florida at St. Petersburg will offer an expedited MBA program for veterans, emphasizing the importance of corporate social responsibility. The university will also provide on-going support seminars and a dedicated career counselor to help veterans navigate course selection and search for jobs. This program will demonstrate how veterans' leadership experiences can be translated into strong business management skills.
