2013 Leadership


The 2013 Leadership Conference was a huge success, and we thank all who attended and helped continue the conversation on graduate management education. We had more than 130 attendees representing 11 countries and 98 universities. For those who attended the Leadership Conference, session handouts can be found under the Concurrent Session and Workshops tabs.

Planning for 2014 is underway. Save the date of January 21-24, 2014 where we will be in Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA. Registration for 2014 Leadership will open in October.

This program is designed for academic and administrative program-level deans and directors from GMAT-using schools and/or members of MBA Roundtable. Limit of two per school until the registration deadline of December 14, or the program fills, whichever is first. This conference allows attendees to learn about industry best practices and current trends through a combination of workshops, presentations and networking opportunities.

The registration fee is US$1,750 for member schools of GMAC and MBA Roundtable and US$2,275 for non-member schools. The registration fee includes all program materials and scheduled meals.

Fostering Curricular Innovation in MBA Programs

Although many MBA curricular innovations quickly get replicated by peer schools and lose their novelty, every so often a course design defies imitation and stands alone as a distinctive offering. To provide you with a framework for what schools of management should be, do, and have to foster curricular innovation, this session makes use of research into three such innovative offerings at MIT, Tulane, and NYU. The speaker will draw on both his EdD dissertation research and his practical experience in launching the Mastery in Communication Initiative at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

How Online MBAs Are Changing the GME Landscape

Idea Lab: Devising Breakthrough Solutions to Old Problems

The news business has struggled mightily with the transition from traditional paper and broadcast formats to fast-changing online platforms. If you were a consultant helping news executives re-imagine the industry, how might you do it? Working from a real-life scenario like this, a facilitator from the design firm IDEO leads you through a workshop on ideation and problem-scoping techniques. You’ll learn simple, human-centered methods for making big problems smaller and finding the right ideas to solve them. In addition to helping you apply these techniques to your own work, this lively session will be a fun way to connect with other attendees, share some laughs, and learn some new tricks.

The Importance of Public Relations and the MBA

In today’s rapidly evolving business and media landscape, companies face new challenges to corporate reputation. To be successful, future managers must understand the importance of public relations and its role in building and protecting corporate reputation. They also need to know how they can leverage traditional and digital/social media strategies to foster brand trust and relevance. This session will review research conducted by the Public Relations Society of America into the importance of public relations knowledge and the gaps that exist in the marketplace. You will also explore what some schools have done to deliver reputation management training, including best practices and learnings, for their MBA students.

More than 100,000 GMAT exams have been delivered since the Integrated Reasoning section was added in June 2012. This session will provide you with insights into what GMAC has learned about the IR section’s performance, what the section can tell you about individual student skills, and how the IR score can become an integral part of your admissions decision-making process. To help you understand the value of IR in and beyond the business school experience, you’ll also receive information and data on testing performance to date and and related research from surveys of corporations and alumni.

Program offerings have expanded from the traditional full-time MBA program to a diverse portfolio of programs that differ in scope, focus, and delivery. Yet, given program innovation possibilities, how can school administrators make more informed decisions about what courses to offer or what program development strategies to pursue - decisions that fit their unique business school characteristics and meet market needs and desires? This session will present GMAC data that shows where the demand is for specific course offerings, as well as recent trends in new program and specialization development, information that will set the stage for an open discussion on what audience members are doing in response to market changes and opportunities. Using Gamification to Engage Alumni and Students

Over two month-long periods, alumni and students of Duke's Fuqua School of Business took nearly 20,000 discrete actions to volunteer for, learn about, or otherwise support the school. This detailed case study will introduce you to an online application of a popular tradition—Duke Basketball Campout—and how it achieved these results using the principles of gamification—a relatively new marketing and communication tool that can engage audiences and achieve desirable outcomes. You’ll come away understanding the mechanics and principles of game-based tactics in non-game environments and explore gamification through real-life examples from Duke and elsewhere. You already know that engagement is the key to sustained productive relationships with students, alumni, and other stakeholder groups. In this workshop, you will learn the five sources of motivation and how leaders can influence their teams to produce positive results. Getting Your Story Straight: The Power of a Clear Narrative

Finding a point of differentiation for your organization is hard. “Operationalizing” it is harder. Building a successful organization upon your point of differentiation is harder still. What do successful organizations have in common that makes all this happen? A really good story—one that ties in with a clear idea of who your customers are, what makes them tick, what problem they’re solving, and how they plan to solve it. This session will illustrate the elements of a strong narrative so you can build one for your own school.

Although there are myriad definitions of leadership, every one of them includes the capacity to relate to other people effectively. Join us at this workshop for a playful and serious exploration of the art of attunement and the science of successful interpersonal connection. To nurture your notion of what makes a leader, we will cover the latest research in neurobiology, mix in treasured principles of psychology, and season with an optimistic dash of philosophy. We will also explore the Centaur Approach to Leadership Development, which is used extensively in corporate leadership training in Europe and the basis of a flagship leadership program at Cranfield School of Management in England.

A frequent speaker and media resource, he is a clinical professor of management and organizations at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business and executive director of the Innovatrium Institute for Innovation, an idea lab.

Jeanne Meister is an internationally recognized leader in creating innovations in the operation and management of an enterprise learning function. Jeanne’s expertise spans the development of a best practice corporate university to the creation of innovative social networks for learning.

She is a co-founder of Future Workplace, an organization with a shared vision for re-imagining the current state of corporate learning and human resources development and helping to prepare companies for the 2020 workplace. Her latest book is The 2020 Workplace: How Innovative Companies Attract, Develop, and Keep Tomorrow’s Employees Today.
