Global Symposium, Singapore

November 19-21, 2012




The Global Symposia series featured two events, the first in October in London and the second in November in Singapore. The events focused on exploring the world of student expectations with panel discussions and expert-led sessions. In all, a total of 122 people attended the Symposia events from around the world. 60 different institutions from 20 different countries were represented at the event. Please keep a lookout on the Upcoming events section next year for information about the 2013 events.

The Global Symposium, Singapore was a fabulous success with record attendance numbers. The event started with Rico Hizon discussing the Asian Perspective: Economic, Political, and Cultural Trends. The event then featured several panel discussions on what students expect from business school, students as the consumer, leveraging your alumni network, using student expectations in the admissions process, and corporate expectations. The event also featured Della Bradshaw on The Global Business School Rankings and Stephen Mangham on Building Brands on Purpose. A total of 81 attendees were at the event. 43 schools were represented from 15 different countries.

What Are Students Expecting from Business School?
What motivates both young graduates and experienced professionals to pursue graduate management education? What do they expect in terms of the academic experience, student life, and future careers? Are the expectations of students studying in India and Asia different from those of students in other parts of the world? These questions are key if your goal is to recruit students  who have realistic expectations about programme offerings, fit smoothly into your classrooms, and are well prepared for post-graduation careers. Rico M. Hizon is the news anchor of BBC World News´ daily business and finance program “Asia Business Report” and general news-based “Newsday.” In nearly 25 years as a broadcast journalist, he has interviewed personalities in the financial, political, and sporting worlds, including Microsoft´s Bill Gates, hedge fund manager George Soros, former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad, and basketball superstar Kobe Bryant.

Rico started his broadcast career at Manila-based GMA Network, where from 1988 to 1995 he covered capital markets, banking, and finance. In 1995 he joined CNBC Asia, based in Hong Kong and later Singapore. There he was the main anchor of the morning edition of “CNBC Today,” “Squawk Box,” “Market Watch,” and “Power Lunch.” He was named the Rotary Club of Manila Broadcast Journalist of the Year for 2012, one of Asia’s top news anchors at the 2011 Asian Television Awards, and a 2010 People of the Year awardee by People Asia Magazine. He graduated from De La Salle University in the Philippines.

Della Bradshaw is business education editor at the Financial Times, where she has worked for the past 24 years in various writing and editing positions. She initially worked in the technology section of the paper, where she was technology lead writer. Della initiated the FT’s business education page in 1995 and published the first FT business school ranking in 1999. Since that time she has been business education editor and a close observer of the evolution of graduate management education.

Before coming to the Financial Times, Della was communications editor for Electronics Weekly, a reporter for Office Systems, and a free-lance journalist. She also taught English in Japan, Turkey, and Italy. She earned her degree in English from the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland.
