Prior to Test Day

Make sure you complete the items below before your scheduled exam:

  • Read the Policies and Procedures for the Essential Skills Assessment. Any activities that result in the Proctor ending your session can potentially cancel your score and you will not receive a refund.
  • Visit the Essential Skills Assessment login page, and ensure you can login with your username and password. If not, contact support or reset your account.
  • Ensure you have Chrome or Firefox installed on your computer. Chrome and Firefox are the only supported browsers.
  • Important: If you are testing on an Apple Macintosh computer running MacOS Catalina (version 10.15), you must follow these special instructions to prepare your browser before test day.
  • Follow these links to download and install the ProctorU extension for Chrome or Firefox.
  • Ensure your computer is ready for test day by following this link to test your hardware, and review the recommended system requirements below.
  • Decide on a secure, private testing area. The assessment may not be taken in public places with other people (e.g., a library or café).
  • Clear your testing area. You cannot have electronics, papers, or other items in the area where you are testing.
  • Make sure your testing area is well lit.
  • Create an event on your calendar for your test time, and set a reminder for 30 minutes before your session.
  • Make sure that you have a valid and up to date government issued photo ID

On Test Day

  • Login at least 15 minutes before your scheduled session to confirm you can access the test.
  • Refresh the “Exams” page at the time your session is scheduled to start and click “Write Exam.” Note, if you still see the “Schedule” button and do not see the “Write Exam” button, please refresh your browser.
  • You may have a clear, unmarked container of water on your desk.
  • So that we can verify your identity, you will be asked to have your picture taken, and will also be asked to take a picture of your government issued photo ID.
  • You will be asked to download and run an application called LogMeIn. LogMeIn will allow the Proctors to communicate with you, remote control your computer, and close unauthorized applications.
  • A live Proctor will connect to your computer and walk you through the rest of testing process – this will take 15 minutes.
  • The proctor will ask you to move your webcam around the room to ensure no unauthorized materials are in the room, and your phone is out of your reach.
  • Once the test begins, you cannot get up from your seat or leave the room at any time. Doing so will immediately end the test. You will not be eligible for a refund.
  • If you have trouble accessing your exam on test day, contact ProctorU support at 1-855-772-8678.
