University of Maryland—Federal City Shelter

Reported by Devon Loetz, program manager for the full-time MBA program at University of Maryland Smith School.

Federal City Shelter & DC Project Students volunteering with the Federal City Shelter and the DC Project witnessed first-hand how entrepreneurship, socially responsible business practices, and good human capital management practices come together to create value.

The DC Project is an organization focused on ensuring the inclusion of DC’s impoverished and at-risk individuals in the local clean energy economy. Federal City Shelter is the largest homeless shelter in the United States. Student volunteers at Federal City Shelter helped the organization clean and organize its overflow sleeping room which is used in the cold winter months to help individuals find shelter inside and avoid hypothermia.
