University at Buffalo—Niawanda Park Clean-Up

Katrina Bytschkow, first  year MBA student, University at Buffalo, School of Management, reports on a service project conducted by UB students.

Students from the University at Buffalo participated in a clean-up project at Niawanda Park in Buffalo, New York. The event took place on November 15, 2009, from 1 to 3 pm.

The community sometimes forgets how important it is to take care of the environment that we enjoy, so we took an action step to clean it up.

The area is home to a variety of plant and animal life, and the trash disposed of harms them. The trash is also not only aesthetically displeasing, but also potentially harmful to both children and adults visiting the park.

Students walked approximately one mile picking up trash ranging from empty bottles and wrappers to cigarette butts. They collected four bags of garbage washed up from the river, as well as trash dropped by pedestrians.

Overall, the students agreed it was a rewarding experience and encourage other people to participate in such an activity.
