Livestrong Challenge—Philadelphia

TeamMBA Picks a Fight Against Cancer in the City of Brotherly Love

TeamMBA participated in the 2009 Livestrong Challenge in Philadelphia on August 23, raising more than $61,700.00 for the fight against cancer.

Twenty-eight team members—including students from George Washington University, Rutgers, Villanova, and Penn State—road their bikes, ran, or walked on the sweltering 92-degree day. The team crossed the finish line together with tears of joy and sorrow, and boasting big smiles for the fight they just picked against cancer.

Jillian White, an MBA Student from Rutgers reflects on the event: “It isn't always easy to set aside time for volunteer work when you're busy juggling full-time employment and part-time MBA studies. But when the volunteer work supports the fight against cancer, I'm all in." This message rang true with all of the TeamMBA students who participated in the challenge.

They also demonstrated their commitment to giving back during the team dinner the night before the event. Students led the charge to unite TeamMBA and the eight other teams having dinner in the same restaurant by donating their excess food to a local shelter. With the support of the restaurant manager and the manpower of the staff, TeamMBA donated more than 25 pounds of delicious Italian food to the local Salvation Army soup kitchen.

Over 6,000 people participated in the Philadelphia Livestrong Challenge, raising more than $3.2 million for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. TeamMBA made an impact on the event by showing the community and the world that MBA’s are in the business of giving back!
