Overview

The Global Symposia series featured two events, the first in October in London and the second in November in Singapore. The events focused on exploring the world of student expectations with panel discussions and expert-led sessions. In all, a total of 122 people attended the Symposia events from around the world. 60 different institutions from 20 different countries were represented at the event. Please keep a lookout on the Upcoming events section next year for information about the 2013 events.

The Global Symposium, London event was a great success! This two day event featured Andrew Clare on the topic of the European Economy and its Effects on Graduate Management Education. The event also featured several panel discussions on student motivations and expectations, how employers are meeting expectations, and how organizational alignment can impact expectations. The event concluded with Natalie Foley discussing a case study on Delivering on Expectations: How Student Experience Mapping Can Maximise Student Satisfaction. A total of 41 attendees were at the event. 23 schools were represented from 12 different countries.

Keynote: The European Economy and Its Effects on Graduate Management Education
After raging for nearly four years, the European economic crisis still seems to have no happy end in sight. Providers of business education in Europe may find it increasingly difficult to attract strong candidates to study in a market that is so economically depressed. Will the Eurozone’s austerity measures bring about a sustainable recovery or simply perpetuate the economic malaise? Meeting Expectations Through Better Organisational Alignment
Admissions directors are tasked with recruiting best-in-class talent — regardless of the world economy, the school’s rank and reputation, and the available budget and resources. Programme directors are expected to deliver an exceptional academic and student experience — regardless of available faculty, budget, and resources, and despite the needs and characteristics of the class. Career service directors are supposed to attract well-known companies with the highest-paying jobs to campus and assure 100-percent placement within three months of graduation — regardless of class profiles and needs. This session will explore these three departments’ sometimes-clashing objectives and help you find ways to improve organisational alignment — and hence the way you deliver on student expectations.

Case Study in Delivering on Expectations: How Student Experience Mapping Can Maximise Student Satisfaction
Experience mapping is an innovative research method that traces the journeys customers take as they receive a service from an organisation; the goal is to improve customer satisfaction by reducing the journeys’ emotional low points and maintaining the highs. This session will illustrate how Peer Insight, an innovation consultancy, worked alongside the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business to implement an experience-mapping project. The university explored both the overall student experience and the non-traditional student experience. You will hear about the surprising insights gained and discuss how you might use this approach at your own institution.

BLAIR BEAVIS
Blair is university recruitment manager for the EMEA region for Johnson & Johnson. She works across the pharmaceutical, consumer, and medical devices and diagnostics sectors to support them in finding the best MBA talent. She joined Johnson & Johnson in June 2011 after spending the majority of her career in financial services, running both MBA and graduate programmes. She also spent two years in career services at London Business School, where she provided career support to master’s students and developed relationships with potential employers. Blair graduated from the University of Essex with a degree in American literature.

ROSALYN CLAASE
Ros joined the University of Edinburgh Business School in November 2011 as the careers manager. Her background includes managing the TalentScotland Graduate Placement Programme and working for seven years at Goldman Sachs in London and Frankfurt, serving as managing analyst recruitment for the Investment Banking and Merchant Banking Divisions across EMEA. In addition, she was a resourcing partner for Barclays Wealth, with responsibility for operations recruitment across the UK and off-shore islands. Ros earned her degree in modern languages (French and German) from the University of Cambridge.

ANDREW CLARE
Andrew is professor of asset management at Cass Business School at City University London and the associate dean responsible for Cass‘s MSc programme. Formerly, he was a senior research manager in the Monetary Analysis wing of the Bank of England and the financial economist for Legal and General Investment Management. Ranked in a recent survey as the world’s ninth most prolific finance author of the past 50 years, Andrew just published a book aimed at improving the investment performance of pension fund trustees.

NATALIE FOLEY
Natalie is vice president and chief operating officer at Peer Insight, a consultancy that combines design and business problem-solving techniques to help organisations innovate. Using her background in strategy, technology implementation, and change management, she leads projects throughout the innovation life cycle, from exploratory thinking through the ins and outs of execution. She has worked across sectors with clients such as IBM, PricewaterhouseCoopers, the World Bank, the US Air Force, and the Good Samaritan Society. Natalie holds an MBA from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business and a BA in psychology from the College of William and Mary.

BEN GLOVER
Ben joined GMAC as the regional director for EMEA earlier in 2012 after working in the academic, educational, and professional publishing sectors. Having spent many years in international business development with publishing houses including HarperCollins and Hachette, Ben has a strategic understanding of market development and professional perspectives on the education sector across Africa and the Middle East. Ben read geography at the University of Bristol, where he also completed an MA in law.

STEVEN HABERMAN
Steve is director and deputy dean of Cass Business School at City University, London. He is also a professor of actuarial science and founding editor of the Journal of Pension, Economics and Finance. He has worked at Prudential Assurance and for the Government Actuary's Department, and has served on the Council of the Institute of Actuaries and many other boards and advisory panels. The author or co-author of five books and more than 150 papers on a wide range of topics, he has also successfully supervised 24 doctorial students. Steve graduated in mathematics from the University of Cambridge, qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 1975, and obtained his PhD and DSc in actuarial science from City University.

GARETH HOWELLS
Gareth, who has worked in graduate management education throughout his career, is the executive director for the Full-Time MBA and Masters in Finance Programmes at London Business School. He has overall responsibility for the strategic development of these programmes, with a focus on curriculum development, positioning, and both internal and external connections. He was also programme director for the Full Time MBA at London Business School for more than three years, working collaboratively to develop the flexible MBA and to increase the programme intake and rankings position. More recently, he was deputy associate dean at LBS, working across the school‘s entire degree portfolio.

ZOE McLOUGHLIN
Zoe joined Boston Consulting Group’s European recruiting team in June 2010 and is based in the London office. As international recruiting manager, she works on the campaigns for London Business School and other UK universities. Prior to starting at BCG, she headed up the international office at the College of North West London and spent five years as the marketing and events manager for the full-time MBA programme at London Business School. During her time at LBS, she also managed admissions for all UK candidates. Zoe holds a BA (Hons) in English literature from the University of Sheffield.

ALEXANDRA PERRICONE
Alexandra joined Sanford C. Bernstein in 2009 as associate director of European research. Her responsibilities include managing the firm's London-based associate population and designing recruitment and development programmes. She started her career in fixed-income sales at Nomura and then moved into equity research, first at Dresdner Kleinwort and then at HSBC. In 2006, she qualified as a business coach and joined Lehman Brothers to run the graduate training and development programme for the Investment Banking Division. Alexandra graduated with an MA in modern languages from Oxford University and speaks Italian, Spanish, and French.

GEORGE PINCUS
George is head of recruiting for the London office of BearingPoint. After spending 25 years in advertising, he moved into executive search in 1992 and helped build a firm that specialised in placing post-MBA individuals in assignments across Europe. He joined BearingPoint in 2002, initially working on pan-European projects and then coming in house with the firm in London in 2004.

GRAHAM RICHMOND
Graham has worked in the MBA admissions space for more than 15 years. After beginning his career at MCS Multi-App, an educational software start-up selling business school application software products, he earned his MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He then joined Wharton’s admissions office. In 2001, Graham launched Clear Admit, which helps applicants find success in the MBA admissions process. He is called upon by media such as The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, and The Economist to discuss trends in MBA admissions.

CHRISTINA SASSOT
Cristina is director of admissions for the full-time MBA programme at ESADE Business School. Six months after graduating from ESADE’s part-time MBA programme, Cristina joined the admissions team as associate director of admissions, responsible for the North American market for the full-time MBA. She moved to her current position in June 2010 and since June 2012 has also been responsible for admissions for the master’s of science in management programme. Before coming to ESADE, Cristina worked in the e-learning arena.

KAREN SIEGFRIED
As MBA executive director at University of Cambridge Judge Business School, Karen is responsible for the strategic, operational, and financial management of the Cambridge MBA. Her previous roles include chief executive and publisher of News Multimedia, a multimedia software publishing division she set up for News International in London; director of planning and new business development at Sunset Publishing/Time Warner in Menlo Park, California; director of marketing and assistant to the president of BantamDoubledayDell Publishing/Bertlesmann in New York; and associate director of the Stanford Alumni Association in Palo Alto, California. Karen received her MBA from Harvard Business School and her BA in history from Stanford University.

MICHELLE SPARKMAN-RENZ
Michelle is an analyst and director of research communications at GMAC, where she focuses on monitoring and analysing shifts across international markets and diverse populations in graduate management education. She is a frequent commentator on trends observed across stages of the student funnel and other key recruiting developments in business schools. Before joining GMAC in 2006, she worked at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, an independent, Washington-based think tank where she was deputy director of institutional relations and assistant director for the Europe Program. Michelle holds a master’s degree in international affairs from George Washington University.

DEBORAH SOMERS
Deb is director of client services for EMEA at GMAC. Before joining the GMAC London office in January 2009, she worked for Lehman Brothers corporate communications team at the investment bank’s European headquarters in London. She also worked at London Business School for more than 10 years in programme management and student services, faculty management, and latterly in development, where she was responsible for donor stewardship. Deb holds a first degree in Russian from the University of Birmingham and an MBA from Henley Business School.

STEPHEN RAOUL SULLIVAN
Stephen is founder of Beyond Spreadsheets, a provider of online databasing tools. He has seven years of IT and operations consulting experience in London and Brussels, where he worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers UK from 2010 to 2012 and as a free-lancer prior to that. He graduated from the Rotterdam School of Management’s full-time MBA programme in 2010.

DEREK WALKER
Derek is director of careers at Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford. He moved to his current position in October 2008 after working in recruitment at a number of large investment banks in London, including UBS, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, and Barclays Capital. He also spent three years as a management consultant and worked with a range of banks, public-sector bodies, and manufacturing and retailing organisations across Europe.

STACEY J. YUEN
Stacey joined Lloyd George Management (Europe) Ltd. in June 2012 to focus on client relations and business development. In 2003 she received an Honours Bachelor of Science degree from University of Guelph in Canada, and in 2011 she obtained her MBA from ESADE Business School in Spain. Post-MBA, she spent one year with the Clinton Health Access Initiative throughout West and Central Africa, engaging with ministries of health on paediatric HIV. Stacey also spent seven years at Burgundy Asset Management Ltd. in Toronto, servicing client and pension consultant relationships in both Canada and the United States.

RENATA ZINKOVSKI
Renata is an analyst in the credit risk department at JP Morgan. She graduated from Russian GV Plekhanov Academy of Economics with top honours. After an internship at Goldman Sachs, she decided to pursue a career in finance. She completed her MSc in mathematical trading and finance from Cass Business School in 2011. Her previous experience includes working as a senior product manager for the adidas group. Renata speaks five languages.
