10 Ways to Reach this Market

Most U.S. military installations have two offices that deal with education. Providing your program information to these offices, especially on installations close to your school, is one means of getting the attention of the personnel and the counselors that advise them.

1. Education Centers — for all military personnel, Education Centers provide information and counseling personnel regarding the pursuit of formal education.

2. Transition Assistance Program Offices (TAP) — for those leaving the military, TAP offices provide seminars, job-search strategies, contact with prospective employers, and sometimes suggestions regarding educational preparation for the workplace.

Advertising in targeted magazines that reach this market, is also effective:

3. GI JOBS — distributed free to all TAP offices

4. ARMY TIMES

5. Alumni magazines published by the service academies (West Point, Annapolis, etc.)

6. Publications with special inserts designed for officers in transition.

Your school can join military support organizations to create a presence in this community:

7. The Reserve Officers Association has regular meetings that provide an opportunity to communicate with military personnel.

8. The Association of the United States Army is arguably the largest membership organization for army personnel, active or retired.

Education and job fairs (see GI JOBS for a partial listing) are held on most major military bases and may be especially effective for recruiting at bases located relatively close to your campus.

9. The Service Academy Career Conference (SACC), held four times a year in various locations, is strictly devoted to job opportunity investigation by graduates of the academies.

You can also have your school’s name and programs listed on websites designed to target military personnel considering an MBA. A word of caution: before paying to be listed on one of these sites, be certain you are comfortable with the other schools listed in terms of recognition and perceived quality:

10. The Graduate Management Admission Council® list of military-friendly schools on mba.com (free), military.com (a subsidiary of Monster), and militarymba.net.

Don't forget about traditional tactics that are effective for you with other markets. Consider contacting undergraduate degree holders from your university who were commissioned through ROTC four years ago, and enlist the help of alumni who came from the military and can serve as spokespeople to their military colleagues. They can provide instant credibility, traffic, and dialogue.
